I have opted to grow tomatoes in pots since I live in the south of France and have a South-East facing balcony. I am a gardening novice, so I am only sharing what I have done, and my results.
Seed: cherry tomato seeds from garden center.
Pot: circular pot with 0.30m top diameter, 0.25m base diameter, and 0.25m depth.
Soil: universal potting soil, and special seedling soil disk for early growth before transplanting into the pot.
Fertiliser (N-P-K): 3-2-5
Water: from the tap (rain water is very likely better though)
Guide structure: three sticks of bamboo (which I got for free off the beach)
Kept them indoors by my balcony window until I got a day above 18 celcius.
Watered them every morning while still in their special soil disk.
Watered them whenever the soil didn't feel moist when sticking my finger in, or when leaves curled/drooped.
Fertilised once a month.
